    1. Hello Kristen,
If you are cooking on stove top pressure cooker, then only cook on medium heat until the pressure is built up. Once you start hearing the sound of ssssssss from whistle, switch off the heat and let the pressure release naturally. This dal needs to be little al dente, but if you want little mushy then cook for one whistle again on medium heat only.

  1. Love your recipes as always!
One thing though point 10 mentions – “Press MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK mode for 0 minutes”. ,
    0 minutes?

    1. Hello Sam, yes you only need to cook it for ‘0’ minute, which means you set up the timer for 0 minute using ‘-‘ sign on high pressure. It starts cooking as soon as you hit the pressure cook button, around 10 minuets during when pressure is building up and then another 20-25 minutes when pressure is releasing, So all in all lentils will be cooking for 30-35 minuets. Trust me your lentils will be cooked in that much time.
More than that the end result will yield into a mushy paste.

      Thank you for reaching out.

  2. 5 stars
Tried this dal recipe, it has come out well, next time will try the corn dumpling to go with it. First time I am making dal curry out of urad dal , always only used it for idli dosa batter. Thanks Rupali for this nutritious recipe.

  3. Hi, I’m curious why you say to add the garam masala at the end? I normally would add it with the spices at the beginning but now I wonder if I have been doing it wrong… Thanks 🙂

    1. Hello Natalie,

The main purpose of adding Garam Masala is to Enhance the flavor of the food. When you add garam masala (Spice Blend), at the end (like any topping ingredient) it retains the flavor of all the core ingredients and adds a nice aroma to the dish.
On the contrary I always wondered why people add Garam masala in the starting with all the other spices, the cooking process will kill all the aroma, flavor and fragrance of Garam masala.
