Urad and Chana Dal – Health Benefits Like other lentils, Urad dal (Black gram lentil) and chana dal (Bengal gram lentil) are also a good source of protein. Urad Chana Dal Ingredients: Black gram lentil (Urad dal) – 2/3 cupBengal gram lentil (Chana dal) – 1/3 cupTomatoes – 2 finely dicedOnions – 1 medium size finely dicedGinger – 1 inch piece gratedGreen chilies – 3 to 4 chopped or slitCilantro – handfulOil (Clarified butter or Ghee preferred) – 2 tbsLime – juice of 1 to 2 limesWater – 4 cup (can be varied depending on desired consistency)Spices Garam masala – 1/2 tspDry mango powder – 1 tspTurmeric powder – 1/2 tspCoriander powder – 2 tspRed chili powder – 1 tspCumin seeds (jeera) – 1 tspAsafoetida (hing) – generous pinchCloves – 6 to 7 Above quantity of ingredients will yield 4 servings. Urad Chana Dal Method: Start the instant pot on SAUTE mode and heat ghee/oil in it. Add asafoetida and cumin seeds and let the seeds splutter. Then add cloves, green chili, ginger and saute for 30 seconds. Next, add diced onion. Now, saute until onions are translucent. After that add tomatoes and saute until soft and mushy. Add all the spices except garam masala and lemon juice and mix them. Wash the lentils for 3-4 extracts of water and then add them to the cooking pan. Add water 3 times the volume of lentils using the same measuring cup and give it a good stir before closing the lid. Press CANCEL and close the instant pot lid with vent in sealing position. Press MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK mode for 0 minutes and let the pressure release naturally(NR) When float valves pops down, open the lid, add garam masala and lemon juice. Urad-chana dal is ready to be served. For extra rich look and flavors, like in the picture below, pour additional tempering from top.
